Lucy
Emergency & Critical Care Nursing Team Leader
BAppSc (Psychology), Cert IV VN
Lucy initially studied Psychology but quickly decided that the Veterinary field was really where she wanted to be. After turning down a place in Veterinary Medicine, Lucy pursued Vet Nursing knowing this is where her heart would be happiest! Lucy has completed her Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing and numerous short courses in areas including behaviour, ECC and general nursing skills.
Since beginning her Vet Nursing journey, Lucy has worked in various General Practice environments where she was able to grasp all the aspects of what being a nurse entails. As time passed and she gained more experience, it soon became clear that Emergency and Critical Care was where she was destined to be. Lucy moved into the ECC field in 2016-17 and hasn’t looked back. She’s worked in various ECC environments including private referral hospitals, shelter and welfare, Melbourne University’s teaching hospital and now VRH!
Lucy particularly enjoys nursing snake envenomations and polytrauma patients. She says “when you care for these patients from start to finish, their transformations can be remarkable. It’s one of the most rewarding aspects of my role”. You’ll often find Lucy presenting talks or webinars on cases like this to help nurses get the best outcomes for these patients no matter what setting they work in.
One of the other aspects of Lucy’s role is managing our team of ECC nurses. This includes lots of communications, training, support and helping build the team as we continue to grow.
Lucy speaks about why she enjoys working at VRH:
“I love all the teams we have in the one hospital and working with so many new and old friends. It’s wonderful to have so many specialists and talented vets and nurses in one building. I love the way we all work together and make the most of any situation we find ourselves in – good or bad!”
Lucy’s family has two small dogs, Cody and Harriet and a cat, Fisher. Living with her are cats Mason and Gibbs as well as a Lab x Maremma, Holly – who is fondly known as Sponge. Outside of work Lucy is often at the beach, the surf and in the sun whilst always trying to spend as much time with family and friends as she can.
